Creating clear boundaries around when you will, and won’t, engage in work tasks is key to disconnecting from work. We all know it can be hard to switch off, so instead of waiting until the weekend or end of the day to do this, take breaks throughout each day in order to reset and recharge. Set aside specific times during the day where you take a step back from checking emails, responding to work messages, or even think about tasks. Train yourself to create a habit of disconnecting – your mental health and wellbeing will thank you for it.

Utilise Technology – Use technology like auto-away messages and leave-of-absence reminders to help with disconnecting from work

If you’re in need of a work disconnect but don’t quite know how to go about it, then technology can be your best friend! Update Zoom chat with a personal note for when you’re on leave, finishing early for the day and so on. If you use Slack, update this too and put an away message on for emails. This not only supports managing expectations, but it also provides alternative options for when you may not be available. For example, I have an internal away email message that provides a breakdown of who to contact and useful links. Embrace technology to disconnect from work and use it as a means to make sure that when you’re away, you have the protection you need to truly switch off and focus on yourself.
