How to Build a Skincare Routine

Beauty, Featured contributor0 comments

You’ve seen the endless skincare products screaming for attention whether that be via Instagram ads, skincare influencers on the platform or the likes of TikTok and YouTube. Now, I’m a bit of a skincare junkie, but it can all feel overwhelmed at times!

Maybe you have a basic routine down but want to add some steps for better skin. Where should you start? How can you figure out what will work best for your skin type? Here’s a quick guide to building a skincare routine that works for you.

Start with a clean face – use a gentle cleanser that won’t strip your skin of its natural oils

It all starts with a clean face! If you don’t take care of your base skincare routine, the rest of your skincare regime will suffer. To get off to the best start and depending on your skin type, use a gentle cleanser that won’t strip away your skin’s natural oils. This is essential for ultimate skin radiance and health: the natural oils in your skin are its defence against the unknown – so don’t skimp when it comes to this first step for beautiful skin. Start with a clean face and get glowing. CeraVe Foaming Cleanser is my bae!

Apply toner to help balance your skin’s pH levels and prep it for the next step

When it comes to skincare, toner is the unsung hero of any routine. Why? Because toner helps restore and balance your skin’s pH levels, prepping it for whatever skincare steps come next. It’s a simple yet effective way to keep your complexion healthy and glowing—after cleansing, just make sure you follow up with a few spritzes or drops of your favourite toner. Its power is proven, so trust that adding this step into your skincare practice will pay off. You don’t need bells and whistles—just get to the basics with a good toner! Use a serum or essence to target specific skincare concerns like wrinkles, dark spots, or dryness

For the skincare enthusiast looking to target specific skin concerns, a serum or essence is a must-have! The powerful formulation of concentrated ingredients helps to target skincare issues like wrinkles, dark spots, and dryness – all common byproducts of ageing. Incorporate one or both into your skincare routine for a rejuvenated look! Whether you choose a serum or an essence, make sure it’s designed with the potency to deliver maximum results in record time. With serums and essences on your side, there’s no limit to what you can do for your skin. I adore Clarins Double Serum.

Moisturise day and night to keep your skin hydrated and healthy-looking

When it comes to skincare, one of the most important habits you can develop is to moisturise your skin day and night. This simple action will keep it hydrated and promote a healthy-looking glow. Making this part of your skincare routine is essential, as hydration helps maintain suppleness in the skin and reduces dryness, irritation, and symptoms of ageing. Maintaining proper hydration also ensures that your skincare products are absorbed more effectively by your skin for better results. With consistent moisturisation, you’ll enjoy smooth and healthy-looking skin for the long haul! Huge fan of Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base.

Don’t forget about sunscreen! Apply it every morning, even if you’re staying indoors all day

No skincare routine is complete without sunscreen. Whether you’re sunning yourself outside or staying cooped up indoors, applying sunscreen every morning should be a part of your daily skincare routine. Sunscreen helps prevent premature ageing and skin damage, so make it a habit to slather it on every single morning. What’s more, if you’re heading outdoors for your daily walk or socially distant picnic with friends and family, don’t forget to keep sundding up—sunburns are always a major risk even when the sunlight isn’t especially strong outside. Don’t skimp out on the sunscreen—it’s always better to stay safe than sorry. Pick one that is best suited for your skin. As a black woman, I use one that doesn’t make me look ghosty!

Cleanse your makeup brushes regularly to avoid bacteria buildup on your skin

Taking care of your skincare routine doesn’t have to be difficult–start by making sure you’re regularly cleaning your makeup brushes! When left unclean, bacteria can accumulate on these brushes and ultimately get transferred to your skin. This bacteria buildup can lead to an array of skincare problems. Don’t take the chance; clean those brushes consistently and keep your skin nourished and free from harmful bacteria. I don’t believe in buying fancy makeup brush cleaners, I use my face cleanser and clean them thoroughly.

Achieving and maintaining clear, glowing skin is a multi-step process that requires commitment and regular upkeep. By following the simple skincare routine outlined above, you can get one step closer to achieving your goal of healthy, beautiful skin! And don’t forget the most important step of all: sunscreen.
