Are you stepping out of your comfort zone? When travelling through the journey of life, there may be times when you find yourself in the same place because it simply feels… comfortable. Now, sometimes it can be a good thing and there are other times when it’s not and it’s a very personal experience.
If you’re thinking, what’s wrong with feeling comfortable Danielle? Well, what’s wrong with comfortable is when you allow yourself to remain in that space, but you know deep within you want to be doing something else, when you want to be somewhere else and when you know there is more you could be doing but due to what you’ve allowed yourself to get used to, you choose to stay comfortable.
Now there are benefits to everything, so for example, remaining comfortable could mean being safe and secure which is on the second tier of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs pyramid.
However, what’s at the top is self-actualisation which is all about achieving one’s full potential, becoming the person that you want to be. This demonstrates that when we explore and step outside of what is comfortable, we are greeted with shifting what was once deemed impossible, to possible because we stepped outside of that comfort zone.
Now I want to get into it and provide more clarity and make this post rich by taking you through 5 benefits to stepping outside of your comfort zone, that will give you food for thought to think about how you can move outside of what you know so let’s get into it.
You develop your ability to take risks
I never considered myself a risk-taker, but when I was given that push to start my own business when I was made redundant that changed. The reason for that is I accepted the challenge with style and grace and just went for it. When we take risks we may fail or succeed, but whatever the outcome may be, we learn. Absolutely everything we learn supports us on our journey and can be shared with others to support them on their journey.
It becomes easier to deal with change
Change is inevitable. Every single day there is something that changes and when you push yourself into the unknown you allow yourself to become more receptive when things change around you. It’s the ability to adapt from one thing to the next because standing still isn’t a recurring theme. By being more adaptable it teaches us to be flexible with life, our emotions and situations.
You will inspire others
Now you might think, well Danielle I’m not interested in inspiring others. Whilst I get that, part of the reason for us being here on earth is to shine the light that is within us onto others to make a difference, create change and make an impact. You have a story to tell and your story could impact millions.
Expanded life experiences
Stepping outside of a comfort zone means being open to explore and experience new things. By doing so, you allow yourself to experience a new level of happiness and/or success because you let down the shield that opens the way to experiencing and gaining access to the things that you desire in life.
Now here’s a make it happen action step for you. Grab a scrap piece of paper and cut it into five pieces. On each one, write down something that would expand your life experience so you should have five. Fold each one up so you can’t see anything that has been written, throw them in a cup, place your hand on the top, shake it around and pick one. Whatever one you pick is the one you should take action on in the next 24 hours.
Build your confidence
Once you understand the emotions that come with stepping outside of your comfort zone, you become more confident. You understand the process and it becomes more familiar to you. Before you know it, you’ll be doing all of those things you wrote on the scrap piece of paper and more!
